Website is finished

Finally the site is finished – It’s been over a year since I last wrote about the site and it’s progress so here it goes.

I managed to customized my own theme a year ago, but after a while I found it very ugly and boring, so around 8 months ago I changed to the wordpress theme Imagination, and I began customizing it to fit my needs, originally Imagination is a highly customizable theme in itself, but I wanted more – and began fooling around with the php scripts, a few days later I had the site up and running and I was satisfied with the result.

After that the site was idle for some time until I thought I needed a forum comment widget on the site – one where I could see the latest topics or posts from the forum, and I started searching for plugins that did just that – however I ran in to a problem.

My problem was that the forum was on Sketch Sepahi’s domain so I had to link to an external forum. And very few plugins did that – eventually I found one called “Last phpbb3 topics”, this however was designed to show the topics in a post or on a page in wordpress – not as a widget.

So I found another plugin "My Custom Widget" to make it into a widget. But once again it was rather ugly… and only text.

The day before yesterday I figured I had to finish the damn widget and I started thinking and asked Sketch how he thought it should look, so I began customizing and you can see the end result in the sidebar – I think it’s quite an accomplishment.

New forum comments widget

Hi

I’ve been somewhat busy studying robotics engineering the last 5 months, but now I have a little vacation until I start again the February 1.

I will however update this site regularly from this point forward.

My latest addition to the site is the forum comment widget, in the sidebar – it’s a widget I’ve customized for this site and my buddy Sketch Sepahis site. I will write more on it in the website section under projects.

Furthermore I’ve deleted all subscribers, because it was impossible to see whether it was spam or real persons behind the accounts. So if I’ve deleted your account I’m very sorry – Now I have a CAPTCHA in place so it shouldn’t be that big of a problem anymore.

Back from the dead

I haven’t posted anything the last couple of months, but I will try to make up for it the next few months :P The reason that I haven’t posted anything is simply because I’ve been lazy… I don’t really have a job right now so i’m just spending my days watching various Tv Shows, but that evil circle I will from this day on, escape from :)

So hopefully I will write more interesting DIY projects and other nice to know things as I come up with them.

The first post will be about my computer and the setup I have in my room :)

Danish yule-tradition and Elves on shelves

Yule, or christmas in denmark is different from many other countries and I found an article on wikipedia which explains some of the danish christmas traditions, among others our relation to elves – in danish called “Nisser”.

Lets start with the danish tradition of Yule Eve (A.K.A. Christmas Eve)

In the evening an elaborate dinner is eaten with the family. It usually consists of roast pork, roast duck or roast goose with potatoes, red cabbage and plenty of brown gravy. For dessert, ris á l’amande, a cold rice pudding dish is served with a hot cherry sauce, traditionally with an almond hidden inside. The lucky finder of this almond is entitled to a small gift. In some families, it’s tradition that the rice pudding dessert is made with the remaining rice porridge from the previous evening, a meal served on the 23rd, Lillejuleaften (Little Yule Eve), with cinnamon, brown sugar and butter. It is eaten warm with a fruit drink or sweet, malt beer.

After the meal is complete, the family will dance around the Juletræ and sing Yule songs and carols (the latter becoming less popular). When the singing is complete, the children hand out the presents which are tucked under the tree. After they have been opened, there are more snacks, candy, chips and sometimes the traditional Gløgg.

In Denmark, Santa Claus is known as Julemanden (literally “the Yule Man”) and is said to arrive on a sleigh drawn by reindeer, with presents for the children. He is assisted with his Yuletide chores by elves known as julenisser (or simply nisser), who are traditionally believed to live in attics, barns or similar places. In some traditions, to maintain the favor and protection of these nisser, children leave out saucers of milk or rice pudding or other treats for them on the afternoon on the 24th, and are delighted to find the food gone on Yule morning.

Danish homes are decorated with kravlenisser (climbing nisse), which are cardboard cutouts of nisser which can be attached to paintings and bookshelves. This is a unique Danish tradition started in the early 20th century.

Christmas Decoration

A few weeks ago, when my family were making candlelight christmas decorations – I, based on this idea: DIY mood-lighting wine bottle (Lifehacker), decided to take it a step further, therefore I made a decoration using the following materials:

  • Decoration clay
  • Twigs from the christmas tree
  • Various christmas ornaments
  • 4 beer bottles
  • A string of 80 yellow LEDs
  • A piece of chicken wire
  • Wire

Sparkleball 2.0

In the first sparkleball post I mentioned that I had bought enough materials to make 2 sparkleballs. And because the first sparkleball was assembled using adhesive tape, the result was rather, how do I put it, unique. Therefore I figured I could glue the cups together – I also considered melting them together, but that would require I worked outside or atleast in a well ventilated room. And that would be too cold, so I assembled the second sparkleball with a glue gun. Below you can see the pictures from the assembling:

Sparkleball

I Stumbled upon som cool-looking christmas spheres apparently called Sparkleballs, I found it on lifehacker here: Prep for the holidays with DIY magic, and my first thought was AWESOME, my second was Unbelievable and finally third – how do I make such a magic sphere?

To my luck the information came as the headline says, with Do It Yourself instructions.  but the standard proportions between top and buttom of the cups are apparently different from the States and those in Denmark, where they only use 50 cups for a ball, my preliminary estimate was that I needed 300 :/ – later I realized it was only half of that but still 3 times as many as they use in the instructions I followed.

But I bought 2 strings of 300 LED’s each, so that I would have 2 LED’s in each 2.5dl cup. But i couldn’tt find the right cups, and if I used 300 cups per sparkleball, I would end up with a ball with a diameter of around 1 m. So I bought 600 plastic shot glass instead, this way I would make 2 sparkleballs. I figured i could assemble the sparkleball using adhesive tape instead of numerous zip-ties as per the instructions. And therefore:

What I thought i needed:

  • Workspace (optionally next to the christmas tree)
  • 300 shot glass
  • Adhesive tape
  • String of 300 LED
  • Drill

This website

This is the first project I am to write about, and unlike the future project I practically have no images to collaborate the story, and I will not write very much as I haven’t written anything down during the process of making this site so it’s all from my memory :/

The Idea to this website came to my around April it should be a website where I could write about all my projects and mini-projects, so I started by buying space on a webserver and domain through One.com and April 18, I had a functional html-based website looking like this, because I already knew how to write html-files:

begin

And as you can see then it look a lot like the current site, however – much have changed, but more about that later.

When the site was up and running I wanted to have a forum on the site – just for the fun of it, and therefore as I had done for my friend Sketch I installed a PHPBB3 forum on the webserver, the installation went like a charm and a forum was soon a reality, I just followed the installation manual on the website – without any problems at all.
